Welcome to Year 12 Specialist Mathematics

Year 12 Specialist Mathematics builds directly on the foundations developed in Year 11 and represents the most advanced mathematics offered within SACE. It is designed to be studied alongside Mathematical Methods, extending students into more abstract, technical and proof-based areas of mathematics. The subject can certainly feel challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding for students who enjoy solving complex problems and understanding the deeper reasoning behind mathematical ideas.

This Catalyst Academics course is designed specifically for South Australian students and closely follows the Stage 2 SACE course structure and the progression of the Haese Mathematics textbook commonly used in schools. We begin with mathematical induction, real polynomials and functions before moving into complex numbers. Students then extend their understanding of vectors, applying them to geometric, motion-based and three-dimensional problems.

The latter part of the course places a strong emphasis on advanced calculus. Students develop a wider range of integration techniques before exploring rates of change, differential equations and vector calculus. Across these topics, they must combine algebra, geometry, functions and calculus rather than treating each chapter as a completely separate area of study. Questions are often multi-layered, so students need to identify an appropriate approach, carry out technically accurate working and communicate a complete mathematical argument.

At Stage 2, school-assessed work contributes 70% of the final result, including Skills and Applications Tasks worth 50% and a mathematical investigation worth 20%. The remaining 30% comes from the externally assessed SACE examination. Our course supports students across each of these assessment styles, from building accuracy and confidence for topic tests to presenting rigorous reasoning in investigations and combining the entire year’s content under examination conditions.

Specialist Mathematics is especially valuable for students considering engineering, physics, mathematical sciences, computer science, actuarial studies, data science, quantitative finance and other advanced STEM pathways. More broadly, it develops persistence, logical precision and high-level problem-solving skills that remain valuable throughout university and well beyond Year 12.
