Welcome to Year 12 Chemistry
Year 12 Chemistry builds on the foundations developed in Stage 1, but the quantity, complexity and level of application increase significantly. Students are no longer expected to simply remember chemical facts or follow familiar calculations. They must connect ideas from across the course, interpret unfamiliar information, justify their reasoning and apply chemical principles accurately in both theoretical and practical contexts. SACE Chemistry also explores how the physical world is chemically constructed, how human activity affects the environment and how society uses the planet’s resources.
This Catalyst Academics course is designed specifically for South Australian students and closely follows the SACE Stage 2 course structure, supported by the Essentials Education workbook commonly used in schools. We begin with Monitoring the Environment and Analytical Chemistry, where students explore how chemical substances can be identified, measured and monitored. The course then moves into Managing Chemical Processes, developing an understanding of reaction conditions, equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, and how chemical systems can be controlled to achieve a desired outcome.
In Organic and Biological Chemistry, students investigate carbon-based compounds, their structures, properties and reactions, as well as their importance within biological systems and modern products. Finally, Managing Resources brings together ideas from across the course to examine fuels, materials, sustainability and the chemical decisions involved in using resources responsibly. A major challenge in Year 12 Chemistry is recognising that these topics are deeply connected, so we place a strong emphasis on helping students transfer their knowledge between chapters rather than treating every concept in isolation.
Stage 2 Chemistry is assessed through an Investigations Folio worth 30%, Skills and Applications Tasks worth 40%, and an externally assessed examination worth 30%. Our course supports students across each assessment style, including practical investigations, scientific reports, Science as a Human Endeavour work, topic tests and final-exam preparation.
Chemistry provides an important foundation for pathways including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering, environmental science, materials science, forensic science and scientific research. More broadly, it develops disciplined problem-solving, quantitative reasoning and evidence-based thinking that remain valuable well beyond Year 12.
