Assessment Overview & Expectations
What the assessment year usually looks like
Year 11 Mathematical Methods is taught under the broader Stage 1 Mathematics subject outline. Assessment is completely school-based, which means there is no compulsory external SACE examination and no single assessment program followed by every school.
A common full-year program treats each semester as a separate 10-credit Stage 1 subject. Under this arrangement, students may complete three Skills and Applications Tasks and one mathematical investigation per semester, giving approximately:
- six Skills and Applications Tasks across the year
- two mathematical investigations
- one school examination at the end of each semester
The examinations are commonly used to prepare students for Year 12 conditions, but they are not a compulsory SACE assessment type. At many schools they are formative and do not contribute to the official Stage 1 grade; at others, they may be incorporated into the school’s assessment program. The current outline requires two or three Skills and Applications Tasks and one investigation for each 10-credit subject. Each official assessment type must contribute at least 20% of the semester grade.
Skills and Applications Tasks
Skills and Applications Tasks, usually shortened to SATs, are the topic tests completed under teacher supervision. They can include routine calculations, unfamiliar applications, interpretation of graphs or data, modelling questions and written explanations. Calculator and notes conditions are set by the school.
A typical six-test Year 11 Methods program may assess:
- relationships, functions and quadratics
- polynomials
- the unit circle and trigonometric functions
- counting, probability and statistics
- growth and decay, exponentials and logarithms
- rates of change and introductory differential calculus
Schools may combine or rearrange these areas, particularly where one chapter is shorter than another.
High-level responses do more than produce the correct numerical answer. Markers are looking for an appropriate method, accurate algebra, correct notation, sensible use of technology and enough working to make the reasoning clear. Students should also interpret answers in context, particularly in modelling, statistics and rates-of-change questions.
The best preparation is regular mixed practice rather than rereading notes. Students should complete questions without assistance, review every error, practise calculator processes and create a short summary of the formulas and question types that repeatedly cause difficulty.
Mathematical Investigations
Students generally complete one investigation per semester. An investigation explores a mathematical relationship or applied problem over an extended period. Possible contexts include modelling projectile motion, optimising an area or volume, analysing periodic data, comparing growth models or investigating a statistical relationship.
The report normally includes the problem, the selected model or strategy, calculations, graphs or tables, interpretation of results, limitations and a conclusion. Each report may be written or multimodal and has a maximum length of eight single-sided A4 pages, excluding permitted bibliography and appendices.
Strong investigations show independent decision-making. Students should explain why a method was chosen, interpret what their results mean and discuss whether their model is reasonable. Simply filling pages with calculator output will not earn a high result.
Semester examinations
A semester exam generally combines several chapters and tests whether students can choose methods without being told which lesson a question came from. Revision should therefore include timed mixed sets, formula recall, calculator fluency and correction of previous SATs. The aim is not only to prepare for that school exam, but also to begin developing the endurance and independence required in Stage 2 Mathematical Methods.
