Welcome to Year 12 Mathematical Methods
Year 12 Mathematical Methods builds directly on the foundations developed in Year 11, but the expectations rise considerably. Students are required to work more independently, connect ideas across multiple topics and apply familiar techniques in questions that may look completely unfamiliar at first. With the final SACE examination also forming an important part of the year, developing both a strong conceptual understanding and reliable exam technique is essential.
This Catalyst Academics course is designed specifically for South Australian students and closely follows the Stage 2 SACE course structure and the progression of the Haese Mathematics textbook commonly used in schools. We begin with differential calculus and functions, extending students’ knowledge of differentiation before applying derivatives to curve sketching, stationary points, points of inflection, optimisation, kinematics and other rates-of-change problems. We then introduce integration and explore how it can be used to calculate areas, analyse motion and solve a range of practical and mathematical problems.
The second major side of the course focuses on probability and statistics. Students work through statistical analysis, discrete and continuous random variables, probability distributions, sampling and confidence intervals. These topics require students to interpret information carefully, select appropriate models and explain what their results mean within the context of a problem—not simply perform calculations.
At Stage 2, school-assessed work contributes 70% of the final result, comprising Skills and Applications Tasks and a mathematical investigation, while the externally assessed examination contributes the remaining 30%. Our course supports students across each of these assessment styles, from building speed and accuracy for topic tests to communicating mathematical reasoning clearly in investigations and bringing the full course together for the final examination.
Mathematical Methods provides an important foundation for many university pathways, including engineering, computer science, data science, economics, commerce, finance, the sciences and a range of health and social science degrees. More broadly, it develops analytical thinking, mathematical modelling and problem-solving skills that remain valuable well beyond Year 12.
