Welcome to Year 12 Biology

Year 12 Biology takes students much deeper into understanding how living systems operate, from the molecular processes occurring inside individual cells through to the evolution of entire populations. Compared with earlier science courses, Stage 2 Biology requires far more than remembering definitions. Students must connect ideas, interpret unfamiliar information, analyse data and explain biological processes clearly using accurate scientific language.

This Catalyst Academics course is designed specifically for South Australian students and closely follows the SACE Stage 2 Biology structure, supported by the Essentials Education workbook commonly used in schools. The course is organised across four major topics: DNA and Proteins, Cells, Homeostasis and Evolution. These areas explore how genetic information is stored and expressed, how proteins and cellular processes support life, how organisms maintain stable internal conditions, and how variation, natural selection and other evolutionary processes shape populations over time. SACE Biology places a strong focus on the structure and function of living things, their diversity and evolution, and their interactions with one another and their environments.

One of the biggest challenges in Year 12 Biology is recognising that the topics are not completely separate. DNA influences protein production, proteins control cellular processes, cells contribute to homeostasis, and genetic variation ultimately drives evolution. Throughout the course, we help students build these connections so that Biology feels like one coherent subject rather than a long list of unrelated facts. Science as a Human Endeavour is also incorporated throughout, helping students understand how biological research interacts with technology, society, ethics and real-world decision-making.

Stage 2 Biology is assessed through an Investigations Folio worth 30%, Skills and Applications Tasks worth 40%, and an externally assessed electronic examination worth 30%. The investigations folio includes practical work and a Science as a Human Endeavour investigation, while Skills and Applications Tasks assess students’ understanding and application of course concepts. Our course supports students in interpreting experimental results, writing clear scientific explanations, approaching investigation reports and preparing confidently for the final e-exam.

Biology provides a valuable foundation for pathways including medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, biomedical science, genetics, biotechnology, environmental science and scientific research. More broadly, it develops evidence-based reasoning, communication and analytical skills that remain useful well beyond Year 12.
